I have learnt that you do not need to take half the house to the beach.

Although, somehow, with children, it can still feel like you have.

For a beach day with a baby and a young child, I like to keep things practical. You do not need lots of toys or planned activities. Most of the learning comes from the beach itself.

Sand, stones, shells, water, seaweed, rock pools and space to move are usually enough.

A few useful things to pack are:

  • Bucket and spade
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Spare clothes
  • Towels
  • Wipes
  • Nappies and wipes, if needed
  • Sun cream or warm layers, depending on the weather
  • A small bag for nappy essentials
  • A waterproof or wipe-clean bag for wet clothes
  • A lunch bag for snacks or picnic bits
  • A pot or small container for temporary treasure collecting

A pram with bigger wheels also makes a huge difference if you need to cross sand. Tiny wheels and beaches are not friends.

And if you are staying for the day, hiring a beach hut can be brilliant. Somewhere to feed the baby, change clothes, shelter from the wind, store bags and have a little reset makes the whole day feel easier.

The main thing is not to overthink it.

Children do not need a perfectly planned beach activity.

They need time, space, snacks, and maybe a bucket.
